Discover the Oceanfront – by using your smartphone

QRCode

Visitors to the oceanfront can now get a free guided tour of some of the city’s best attractions by simply using their smartphones.

They have black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background and can be spotted along the Virginia Beach boardwalk. Quick Response or QR Codes have been in use for years in marketing and advertising as a way for millions of smartphone users to gain additional information about a company or product. And now, that technology is being used along the boardwalk to help educate visitors and citizens about Virginia Beach attractions and points of interest.

The Strategic Growth Area/Resort Management Office partnered with Beachevents and Communications and Information Technology/Multimedia Services to create Discov-QR Virginia Beach, a series of promotional videos to highlight destinations like the Cape Henry Lighthouse, the Norwegian Lady and others. Anyone using a smartphone or tablet with a bar code reader application can simply point it at the black and white QR Code to display a link on the device that when clicked, takes the user to a video about the corresponding attraction or point of interest.

Signs are located along the boardwalk in the proximity of each attraction. These include the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum, Naval Aviation Monument, Virginia Legends Walk, the Norwegian Lady, the King Neptune statue, the Old Coast Guard Station, and a history of the resort. Also located long the boardwalk are QR Code signs for Naval Air Station Oceana, the Cape Henry Cross, the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse, and the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center.

Each video is 60 to 90 seconds long and designed to entertain, educate and entice boardwalk strollers to scan the codes and Discov-QR Virginia Beach.
