Citrus Breakfast & Lunch – and two locations to boot

The smell of fried soft-shell crabs and sweet buttermilk pancakes fills the air. It’s a Wednesday morning and the parking lot of Citrus in Virginia Beach is full.

Inside, husband and wife team Lance and Cheri Shores are chatting with customers behind the bar, as waitresses buzz to and from the kitchen where the cooks on the line are pushing out plates of blueberry french toast drizzled with cream cheese frosting, fried chicken with scrambled eggs smothered in gravy and omelets filled with lumps of crabmeat.

This breakfast and lunch restaurant – best known for serving pancakes the size of your head and soft-shell crabs covered with eggs and hollandaise – is opening a second location at 357 N. Great Neck Road in Virginia Beach.

The new restaurant, which sits in front of the Renaissance Palace Shopping Center, is a former Ruby Tuesday, one of 30 the company closed in January after reporting more than $34 million in losses for the second quarter of 2014.

In mid-May, the Shores purchased the 1.2-acre property and started ripping down walls, adding two large decks for outdoor seating and brightening the building’s interior with more windows.

The goal is to be open in three months. Though Cheri could not say how much the couple expects to invest when all is said and done, the property alone was listed at $1.9 million on

At 5,097 square feet, the new location will be 2,000 square feet larger than the original Citrus off Shore Drive at 2265 W. Great Neck Road and offer more parking.

It’ll bear the same name, not Cirtus II or Citrus Squeezed.

“Just Citrus,” Cheri said. “It’ll be identical to this, just a different address.”

The orange, yellow and green color scheme, reminiscent of the fruit the restaurant is named after, will also be carried over, as will the restaurant’s dog-friendly policy for outdoor diners.

“We want to make sure people are getting the same experience they get here,” Cheri said. “There’s not a business plan for multiple locations at this point.”

At least, not beyond a second restaurant.

When the couple first opened in 2006, they felt they were entering an untapped market. Citrus was one of only a handful restaurants in the area to focus solely on brunch.

But now, Lance said, there are at least 20 other places in a 3-mile radius doing what he does. Four are within a block.

The new restaurant is another way for the Shores to diversify and stay competitive in a growing market.

Though there may be several options for brunch in town, business at Citrus is rarely slow. On a Saturday morning, the wait for a table at the restaurant, which was featured on “Diners Drive-Ins and Dives” on the Food Network in 2011, can be as long as 45 minutes.

The Shores are hoping the second location will help with that too, but if you’re forced to wait, the bar is open.

The drink menu features fresh squeezed juices – from your typical orange and grapefruit, to watermelon and cantaloupe. Lance has tried them all.

Citrus has 11 different mimosas including the Manmosa, which is a traditional mimosa kicked up a notch with a shot of vodka, as well as 15 signature cocktails, coffee and espresso.

“This is our specialty and we love being creative,” Cheri said. “We don’t get complacent with our menu. We’re constantly changing. We have four different specials a day and four breakfast specials on the weekend.”

Citrus is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
